June 17, 2018, MANILA – adidas Philippines drove to frenzy basketball fans all over Manila as it brought one of the hottest rising stars of NBA to the Philippines. adidas Philippines on June 17, 2018 welcomed one of the most promising rookies in the NBA this playoffs, Donovan Mitchell, also known as Spida.
The 21 year-old shooting guard from Utah Jazz started his journey to greatness when he was
selected by the Denver Nuggets with the 13th overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft and was later traded on draft night to the Utah Jazz.
Mitchell redefined what it means to be a rookie by equating it with greatness. He became the first
NBA rookie to score 40 points in a game since Blake Griffin in 2011, and surpassed Darrell Griffith’s
team-record 38 in 1981. Mitchell also became the seventh rookie in franchise history to have a 30-
plus point game, as well as the first to have a 40-plus point game.
On March 1, 2018, Mitchell was named as the Western Conference rookie of the month for the 3rd
time this season for games played in February. On April 10, he set a rookie record for most 3s in a
season with 186 3s in a 119–79 win over the Golden State Warriors. On April 12, at the end of the
regular season, Mitchell was named Western Conference Rookie of the Month for March and April.
No wonder he’s got all eyes on him, including the basketball-loving Filipinos.
Mitchell kicked off #SpidainMNL through a press conference in newly expanded adidas store in Two Parkade, BGC. With questions from the press, he indulged the audience by sharing his rookie journey and how it molded him to be the unique player he is today.
His visit would not be complete without giving the Filipino basketball fanatics a glimpse of how he
works on the court. Up against adidas Creators Jerrick Ahanmisi, Renzo Subido, Jason Credo, Rey
Nambatac, Jjay Alejandro and Rhayyan Amsali, Spida did a 3-point shootout for charity. Some of the local Creators such as Jericho Cruz, Alex Mallari, Arvin Tolentino, Maverick Ahanmisi, Diego Dario, and Kobe Paras also showcased their creativity through the SPIDA Challenge (game of HORSE) and Slam Dunk Challenge.
To the delight of even more Filipino fans, Mitchell dropped by the PBA game against Barangay
Ginebra and Magnolia Hotshots, for a quick sports commentating stint.
“adidas moves and supports athletes who are set to make their mark through their creativity. Donovan Mitchell, with his consistently rising stellar record, proves to be just that. By bringing him to the Philippines, we push Filipinos to recognize the power of creativity and the greatness of a rookie, and hope to inspire our local athletes,” said Jen Dacasin, Brand Communications and Sports Marketing Manager of adidas Philippines.
Spida flew out of Manila on June 18, 2018.
