Trend Micro Predicts Fake News, Ransomware, Email Scams to Continue in 2018

In an annual report, the global leader in cybersecurity provides an insight into the threat landscape that lies ahead of users and enterprises

MANILA, Philippines – As the world becomes more interconnected and digital, users and enterprises will brave new threats that take advantage of systems’ weaknesses in 2018, according to Trend Micro, Inc.

In a report titled “Paradigm Shifts: Trend Micro Security Predictions for 2018,” the global leader in cybersecurity forecasts the prevalence of digital extortion, business email compromise, and fake news, among others.

“In today’s increasingly interconnected environments, users and enterprises in the Philippines stand as vulnerable as the rest of the world to different forms of cybercrime,” said Myla Pilao, director for technology marketing at Trend Micro.

Digital extortion will define most cybercriminals’ business model and pave the way for new schemes. Vulnerabilities in IoT devices such as drones, wearables, and medical devices will expand the attackers’ ground.

Losses from Business Email Compromise (BEC) will exceed US$9 billion next year. Fake news, which Trend Micro expects to continue spreading, will add to risks faced by enterprises as it can be used to damage the reputation of companies for competitive purposes.

Machine learning and blockchain technologies will bring benefits as well as pitfalls to enterprises. Machine learning, in particular, can enhance security solutions but comes with blind spots that cybercriminals will exploit at an increased rate.

On the regulatory front, Trend Micro expects companies to take definitive actions to comply with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation only when the first high-profile lawsuit is filed.

“The threat landscape is constantly evolving and shifting with the emergence of new technologies,” Ms. Pilao said. “The expected prevalence and rise in cybercrime in 2018 only illustrates the importance of investing in security.”

Enterprises and users alike will have to take a multilayered approach to minimize the risk of compromise, given the widening range of threats.

“Enterprises and users must have a connected threat defense – from the email and web gateway to the endpoint – to ensure maximum protection against the constantly evolving threats,” Ms. Pilao said.
